Oscar® Invites Over 770 New Members!

#Oscar® aka @TheAcademy aka The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (A.M.P.A.S.®) released their annual list of invitees to become voting members on Tuesday. All together the 17 branches within the academy invited a total of 774 new members to join the exclusive club that decides who wins the entertainment industries highest honor each year.

In a wonderful surprise over 34% of the invitations sent out were for women and over 29% to people of color. This is huge progress for Oscar®, it was widely reported in 2015 and 2016 that over 65% of all voters were white and male.

Fun Fact: Comedy legend Betty White is 95 and didn’t receive an invited until today. Making her the oldest person in the history of #Oscars® to be invited to join. During her career so far she has won a total of 8 Emmy® Awards (1951, 1975, 1976, 1983, 1986, 1996, 2010, 2015).

Recap of voting basics: Each voting member selects their top five (5) choice in their designated branch category or categories depending on the branch and selects their top five (5) Best Pictures choices. From those selections the nominees are selected for each of the 23 categories and announced between the second or third week of January annually. After the nominations are announced, final ballots are made available to members. All members vote in all categories on the final ballot and the winners are determined by the top vote getter in every category. Winners are then announced at the live broadcast in late February at the prestigious awards ceremony televised on ABC and viewed by over 1 billion viewers worldwide.
