TERO ISOKAANTA:

Tero Isokääntä was born in Kalajoki, a small city in Finland, in 1982. Tero’s mother is an artist as well so they have joked that he started painting in her stomach when she was pregnant. Tero was doodling with pens before he could even walk and completed his first oil painting when he was four. He excelled in the medium but grew impatient for the oils to dry and a decade later turned to acrylic, which better suits his process.

From 2000-2003, Tero became a glass artisan. While experimenting with glass creation, he also studied Native Americans, assorted religions and spirituality, which inspired mystical figures and presences in his various artistic projects.

Finland requires that all males serve in the army a minimum 6 months or do civil service for 13 months. A pacifist and war resister, in 2006, Tero refused and was sentenced to prison for six months. Being a political prisoner, albeit a peaceful one, was quite a shock, but he remained affable and got along with everyone without incident. Ultimately, he is grateful for that experience because it exposed him to a variety of influences which has educated and enlightened him, and focused his art in intention and energy.

Currently, Tero usually pairs a human or animal with nature/space in his paintings, and layers in spiritual symbolism. He hopes to take the viewer into a peaceful meditative state of wonder, giving respite from today’s overstimulus and information flood.

HOLLYWOOD ALERT: Tero, what is your inspiration?

Every day I go hiking in the forest with my wife and our dog, to charge my batteries before I create art. I enjoy looking starry nights and diverse nature with childlike eyes, like it´s first time I see this beauty. Other things that I draw my creativity is, I like to read books and listen all kinds of music. Normally when paint I choose music according to mood I want to create in the painting.

HOLLYWOOD ALERT: What are your future plans?

I want to continue to develop myself as a person and as an artist, as well as to hone my art techniques. Meanwhile it would not be bad thing if I would come internationally famous from my art.
